The Witchery by the Castle

Edinburgh, Scotland

This extraordinary collection of fantasy suites near Edinburgh Castle is the ultimate romantic hideaway: sumptuous, indulgent, and slightly (delightfully) mad. Expect four-poster beds and generous breakfast hampers.

Location

9 / 10

Either above the famously atmospheric Witchery Restaurant, close to the castle gates, or a few steps away across the Royal Mile, secreted in Jollie’s Close. You cannot stay any closer to the heart of the city.

Style & character

9 / 10

If Pugin designed gothic revival love nests they would look like this: an outrageous riposte to modern minimalism. A restaurant with rooms, so no residents' lounge or bar - these suites are intimate, secret dens of high-flown delight.

Service & facilities

9 / 10

Efficient and discreet. Roxy, the presiding spirit of the place, practically has his own fan club.

Rooms

9 / 10

The nine suites are an antique dealer’s dream: the rooms set-dressed with fascinatingly eclectic clutter; all jewel-coloured velvets, silks and brocades, carved wood, gilding and candle-light - think decadent ecclesiastical. Beds are dramatically draped or four-postered (or both); chin-deep bateau baths are perfect for sharing. Behind hidden doors a dining hall, sitting room, dressing room or study will surprise and delight. Modern comforts are not neglected, with Bose sound systems, iPod docks, GHD straighteners and cunningly concealed televisions. The ‘Inner Sanctum’ has a working fireplace, while the ‘Turret’ boasts the best views.

The restaurant offers a three-course set price lunch or dinner for £35 or á la carte from about £40. There is no bar, but you will probably be happy drinking the bottle of champagne on ice waiting in your suite.

Value for money

Extravagant? Yes, but there is nowhere else quite like this. Double suites from £325 to £395, including generous continental breakfast hamper (full Scottish breakfast in the restaurant, £12.95), newspaper, mineral water, chocolate, cookies, and champagne on arrival.
