The St George Hotel

Harrogate, Yorkshire, England

An Edwardian mansion overlooking Harrogate’s magnificent Royal Hall, The St George Hotel is a traditional hotel with genteel atmosphere and friendly staff. You’ll leave feeling like you’ve been given a huge Yorkshire hug.

Location

9 / 10

You could roll down the hill from Bettys Café Tea Rooms and you’d arrive at the foot of The St George Hotel – an excellent location in an area brimming with arts and culture, close to the town centre. Not only does the hotel overlook the Royal Hall, it’s minutes away from the fashionable boutiques, galleries and cafés of Montpellier Quarter, a minute’s walk from the Harrogate International Centre and a stone’s throw from Valley Gardens and the Royal Pump Room Museum. The hotel is a good base for exploring the area.

Style & character

7 / 10

The St George Hotel is homely, reliable and relaxed. Some of the furnishings have begun to age, and the décor needs smartening up, but a soft renovation is underway. Original features like the beautifully-restored Art Nouveau windows, stucco ceilings and fireplaces on the refurbished ground floor are complemented by modern touches such as pretty lampshades, contemporary baroque mirrors and canvas artwork of the local area on the walls.

Service & facilities

8 / 10

Staff welcome you with a big smile. The foyer is designed for lounging, perfect for a pre-dinner drink or after-dinner coffee - a pianist comes in on Wednesday evenings.

Aside from having its own swimming pool, the hotel offers an array of leisure facilities including a sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and a gym with separate weights room. Two large function suites host weddings and events including a monthly comedy night.

Rooms

7 / 10

Simple and unfussy bedrooms come with comfortable beds, large TVs and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Some of the furnishings could do with an update or replacing (scuffed veneers, Eighties-style phones) and the size and age of the building means rooms can be nippy but the heating works well once turned on. Bathrooms are spotless and modern. Despite the double-glazed windows, traffic and pedestrian noise was noticeable but it’s the price you pay for views over the Royal Hall.

Food & drink

7 / 10

The restaurant menu combines traditional British fare with international favourites; from sirloin steak, fish and chips and lamb shank to dim sum, gnocchi and katsu chicken. Dishes were well-presented; the gnocchi was a touch bland but the grilled duck breast and the lemon sole "a la Savoy" for mains (around £15) were tasty. There’s plenty of choice, with something to suit everyone, and the menu expresses that any dietary requirements can be met with notice.

For breakfast, not only was there a continental buffet (not including cheese, meats and pastries) and a hot counter, the hotel also offers an à la carte menu featuring the likes of kippers, smoked salmon and scrambled egg. Tea and coffee is also available.
