How many pieces of luggage can I bring in the cabin with me?
The maximum size for cabin baggage is 23cm x 36cm x 56cm.
How much can each bag weigh?
10kg for economy and premium economy class. In Upper Class (business/first cabin), passengers may take two bags, weighing a total of 16kg, while each individual bag should weigh no more than 12kg. Upper Class fliers can also bring a garment bag (which would count as one of their two bags) that is no more than 20cm thick.
You must be able to place your hand baggage in the overhead bins unaided.
Can I book a hold bag on a single leg, and travel hand-luggage only on the other?
No. Virgin Atlantic says that hold baggage is included in your ticket, so if passengers book a return, they are entitled to baggage in both directions. If you don’t have anything to check in on one leg, then you don’t pay any less.
Am I allowed any items in addition to my one cabin bag?
In addition to the cabin baggage allowances as above, Virgin Atlantic passengers may bring a handbag, small backpack/rucksack, pocketbook or purse, "as you would normally use it". The airline says this means that it should not be used to carry items that would otherwise go in the cabin bag.
Passengers may also bring an overcoat, an umbrella or walking stick, a small camera and/or pair of binoculars, a "reasonable amount" of reading matter for the flight, a "small amount" of duty free goods, and headphones to use the in-flight entertainment system.
Laptops cannot be carried separately from the cabin bag: they must either fit in the cabin bag, or be checked into the hold. Passengers cannot carry a garment bag as cabin baggage unless it falls within the dimension restrictions. In addition to their free check-in luggage allowance, passengers travelling with children are allowed to bring a fully collapsible pushchair and car seat. See Virgin Atlantic's policies on cabin baggage here.
