"I think nowadays a band wouldn't do that – actually write back if you wrote in. That's the letter that's in the exhibition at the moment.
"I sent more photos in from the band’s Summer tour in 1981. One night when I was coming home from work I went for a drink with my dad. As I was leaving he told me 'some Weller woman [Ann Weller, Paul’s mum and manager of the fan club] phoned for you', and I ran home and waited for the phone call. I was worried it was a wind-up, but she called back at the end of the week, and said that the band had really liked the images I sent in, and that they'd like to have a meeting with me to discuss a possible photo session.
"This was me as a completely amateur photographer, and they were huge at the time … they'd had number ones [Going Underground and Start]"
