Katy Perry's white house down: the 12 funniest pop star falls

As much as we like to treat pop stars like our own versions of Greek Gods, with their beautiful faces and shiny teeth, sometimes gravity can't help but get the best of them. As Katy Perry literally brought the house down at last night's Brits, we've assembled a collection of unintentional pop star dives that have brought new meaning to the lyrics, "Let's dance, let's shout, shake your body down to the ground."

1. Katy Perry's Brits dancer

Poor Katy Perry. She just can't help but be perpetually upstaged by some of her more vertigo-inclined back-up dancers. Two years after her out-of-time 'left shark' dancer stole all of her thunder at her 2015 Super Bowl Halftime show, a dancer in a giant house costume quickly dominated conversation during her performance at the 2017 Brit Awards. Absently mindedly getting into the choreography, the dancer inadvertently tumbled off stage and onto the dinner table of some members of the Brits audience. Oops.

2. Madonna takes a bow

The house-costumed dancer was bad, but it still pails in comparison to Madonna's gargantuan tumble at the 2015 Brits. Struck down by a potentially sabotaged cape, which she presumably destroyed in a fit of rage soon after, Madonna was dragged backwards and off a small platform by one of her dancers, who she presumably destroyed in a fit of rage soon after. After a brief period of concern, the pop legend staggered to her feet and finished off her performance, cementing her reputation as a consummate professional.

3. Travis Scott falls into a hole

Modern pop star stages are full of trap doors, floating gangways and, if you're Pink, tedious trapeze apparatus, so it's no surprise that Travis Scott seemed to forget there was a giant hole in the floor when joining Drake on stage for one of his London shows this year. Like Alice tumbling into Wonderland, Scott vanished without a trace, until a giggling Drake pulled him back up onto his feet. He later offered the 20,000-strong crowd a refund.

4. Diddy goes down

Scott wasn't the only rap star to fall prey to villainous stage holes. At a Bad Boy Records reunion performance for the 2015 BET Awards, where he re-teamed with fellow Nineties hip-hop luminaries including Lil' Kim and Mase, Diddy didn't spot the giant hole in the floor that Kim would materialise from seconds later. So he fell in it.

5. Michelle Williams soldiers on

Poor shuffling Michelle Williams was never the best dancer in Destiny's Child. In fact, she couldn't seem to execute even the most basic of hairography without losing her footing somehow. But her grandest of dance fails was arguably during an appearance on 106 & Park in 2004, where she tripped and fell to the floor mere seconds into a performance of Soldier. The complete lack of sympathy sent her way by band mates Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland even spawned its own Tumblr page dedicated to Williams's numerous 'third wheel' fails, appropriately dubbed Poor Michelle.

6. Beyoncé's face-plant

But the Dance Gods are known to be equal opportunity tricksters, even making the high-priestess of choreographed perfection, Beyoncé herself, susceptible to mid-performance fails. In the middle of a performance of her shrieky 2006 anthem Ring the Alarm at an Orlando concert in 2007, Bey tumbled backwards on steps and then face-planted right after - a rare 'falling off stage' twofer.

7. The Edge versus... the edge

Over 30 years into his career, fate finally caught up with a man dubbed 'The Edge', with the U2 bassist tumbling off the literal edge of the stage during a 2015 concert. There's something very Faces of Death about this particular clip, Adam Clayton's slow, steady steps to the corner of the gangway, his complete lack of awareness of the inevitable tumble he's been destined to experience right around the corner, and the way his foot just seems to hover mid-air before his body gives way. It's essentially a slow-motion horror movie for acrophobiacs.

8. Olly Murs, stairmaster

If Stevie Wonder was dead, observers would likely remark that his spirit materialised in a Guildford concert hall and made Olly Murs fall down a flight of stairs for butchering a rendition of Signed, Sealed, Delivered. But Stevie Wonder isn't dead, so we have no obvious ghostly apparitions to thank for this. Alas, it's still pretty funny.

9. Iggy Azalea brings up the rear

Like a dark omen predicting her subsequent career decline, Iggy Azalea took a tumble off stage while performing her 2014 hit Fancy. To be fair, it's a great fall, at a graceful rear-first angle, arms proudly outstretched. Azalea also proudly posted a clip of it on her Instagram soon after, which is admirable.

10. Pink turns the air blue

Pink is notorious for flying around her concert halls, seemingly unable to sing without being strapped in to some kind of acrobatic device, so naturally she's experienced one or two mishaps. During a Germany gig, Pink was meant to be tied to wires and pulled up over the crowd. But the stunt went awry, sending her flying into the audience instead. Much swearing and apologies ensued.

11. Anthony Kiedis hits the dancefloor

During a Pittsburgh gig in 1996, Kiedis got tangled up in his mic cord and tripped over the speakers on the stage. Unfortunately, he couldn't pull a smooth transition from unintentional trip to intentional stage-dive, meaning he landed flat on his face on the presumably very sticky ground below. It was so bad that he ended up hitting his head and tearing his leg muscle, all of which he recounted in his 2004 memoir Scar Tissue. Proving his rock star credentials, however, Kiedis still managed to finish up the show.

12. Shirley Manson isn't phased

Another Nineties rock star who merely seemed to shrug their shoulders at near-death via stage tumble is Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson, who tripped up and straight into the audience mid-show. After a bit of awkward fumbling with the crowd she presumably face-planted into, she carried on singing. What a pro.
