J-C Mas Pinot Noir 2016, Pays d’Oc IGP, France £6.99
Pinot noir is one of the finest red grapes in France. In great vintages it reaches peak performance in Burgundy with glorious – but often expensive – wines. For pinot noir at an unbeatable price, head south to the Languedoc – France’s answer to the New World. It’s here that Aldi discovered this super value pinot noir “Réserve” from Jean-Claude Mas.
In the vast, varied and reliably clement Languedoc region, you find vineyards in the folds and creases of the hills where pinot noir not only thrives but reveals its most vibrant and fruity characteristics. And because the price of land is far lower than in Burgundy, the wines can offer very tempting value.
The pinot noir “Réserve” from Jean-Claude Mas is bold and stylish with ripeness that even New World wine fans will appreciate. It is medium full-bodied and brimming with bright raspberry and black cherry fruitiness. The texture is smooth and caressing and because part of the cuvée was aged in oak, it has an attractive, underlying note of spice.
Foodies will love its versatility. It goes beautifully with oven-roasted tuna tail wrapped in pancetta and equally well with flame-grilled lamb chops. It can even be served with rare roast beef and adds real panache to that retro dinner party classic, coq au vin.
