Exquisite Argentinian Malbec 2016, £5.99
Argentina has made Malbec its own. Malbec from elsewhere just doesn’t have quite the same cachet. But Argentina is a big country and it makes a lot of wine, so it pays to be a little choosy about exactly where your Malbec is grown.
Aldi’s Argentinian Malbec is part of the Exquisite Collection, which showcases classic wines, regions and winemakers from around the world. The grapes are from the Uco Valley – home to many of Argentina’s greatest reds. The vineyards lie at altitudes of between 900 and 1300m against the spectacular backdrop of the mighty Andes. The days can be hot but the nights are invariably chilly... and therein lies the secret to this juicy, aromatic Malbec.
Actually, there is another secret. Peer closely at the label and you’ll just make out the name of the winemaker, Gustavo Bauza. He’s famous in wine circles. A little while back, at the Decanter World Wine Awards – one of the UK’s most prestigious competitions – a Gustavo Malbec won the trophy for the best single varietal red under £10. His expertise really shines through in this wine too.
It has a deep ruby colour. The pretty aromas are of soft fruits including mulberries and blackberries. It’s youthful, well balanced and medium-bodied, with a persistent mouthwatering fruitiness. If you’re searching for a delicious, great value “house red” that goes well with all sorts of family meals from pizza, pasta and gourmet sausages to the Sunday roast, you should start right here.
