Asti Spumante DOCG, Italy £5.39
If champagne is the queen of sparkling wines, Asti spumante is the fairy princess. Aldi’s Asti is magical – 30 out of 33 online reviews give it a full five-star rating. Make sure you include a bottle or two in your next online order.
Moscato (or muscat) is thought to be the oldest grape variety in the world. It’s one of the few you might actually describe as having a “grapey” aroma. Its appeal is perennial and it’s widely grown, but one of the best and most famous muscat regions of all is Asti, in northern Italy.
Spumante simply means sparkling, but the bubbles have a wonderful delicacy. Aldi’s Asti has a texture of fairy floss, the scent of fresh grapes and orange blossom and the mouthwatering flavour of lemon sherbet and juicy peaches.
The flavour is sweet but not at all cloying, thanks to a lovely freshness. This wine is more than just easy drinking, it’s effortless – but you needn’t worry if it slips down a treat because at a mere 7 per cent volume, it won’t go straight to your head.
It’s a welcome Sunday brunch tipple, the perfect picnic fizz, a great garden-party wine. And if you’re romantically inclined, there’s no better way to serenade a sunset on a warm summer’s evening than with a glass of this chiffon-light Asti.
