Food writers don’t write about the occasions on which they don’t want to cook. They’re reluctant to admit to an inward sigh as they realise it’s 6pm and they don’t have a clue what’s for supper. That would be to let the cat out of the bag. 

I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy to pretend, but we generally weave a picture of a life in which we cook from scratch every day and enjoy the sensual pleasure of squeezing a lemon. That’s OK. It’s true that you’ll be happier if you don’t stick ready meals into a microwave; it’s definitely true that you’ll feel healthier and spend less money.

But let’s not pretend that daily cooking involves going to the local market with our much-loved shopping basket and filling it with courgette flowers (which we then stuff and deep-fry for our children).

Life is not, most of the time, like that.
