HOWLING HOPS TANK BAR
Howling Hops Tank Bar was the first, and remains one of the only places in the UK that serves all of its beer directly from the tank, rather than out of kegs or casks.
The bar has a whopping 10 tanks of beers, ranging from fresh pale ale to smoked porter. Long bench tables and outdoor seats not far from Regent's Canal, and a small pop-up kitchen doing smoked barbecue make this one of the best and unique places to drink beer in the UK. Howling Hops (the name is an homage to bluesman Howlin’ Wolf) started life brewing hoppy, New World-style beers in the basement of the Cock Tavern in Hackney.
In the interests of space and effort-saving, it served the beer directly from the tanks in the cellar, via pipes that connected them to the taps on the bar. This streamlined approach, which eliminated the step of putting the beer into kegs, inspired the idea of opening the full tank bar.
One or two experimental brews, such as the recent double chocolate coffee toffee vanilla milk porter, are usually on offer, though its 6.9% West Coast-style IPA goes down well on almost every visit.
