Wonder Woman faces wrath of fans for 'digitally blurred' hairless armpits

DC Comics probably assumed that merely not making Suicide Squad again would be enough to deflect criticism of their upcoming Wonder Woman, but they failed to anticipate a heated controversy lurking snug in the under arms of their star Gal Gadot: her armpits.

Fans have taken to social media to question a brief shot of the superhero glimpsed in the film's latest trailer, which appears to show her armpits digitally bleached. As if Warner Bros. took a waxing strip to their star mid-motion, Wonder Woman's armpits are noticeably paler than the rest of her body, leading some to question whether they have been blurred in post-production.

Fans also questioned whether Wonder Woman, a fictitious character, would shave her armpits at all, particularly as she comes from a mythical island devoid of mainstream beauty standards.

Others were more mocking of the whole debacle.

Believe it or not, Gadot's pits are the latest in a run of criticism leveled at the Israeli actress, whose body has been a battleground for social media sniping since she was first cast as Wonder Woman. Gadot was initially criticised for being "too physically small" to convince as the Amazonian superhero, who has occasionally been portrayed in comic books as more muscular than the model-turned-actress.

When Gadot packed on 17 pounds of muscle during pre-production fight training, criticism was bounced to her breast size, with basement-dwelling nerds claiming Gadot's chest just wasn't big enough for the fictitious lady she had been hired to play.

"They said that I was too skinny and my boobs were too small," Gadot told the Israeli website Ynet (via Entertainment Weekly). "After they asked me here, in Israel, if I have eating disorders and why am I so skinny – they said my head was too big and my body was like a broomstick – I can take anything.

"It's just empty talk. I understand that part of what I'm doing means being exposed. And part of being exposed is being under fire. When I was younger I would take criticism really hard. But now it mostly amuses me. The true Amazons had one boob so it wouldn't bother them in their archery. So it's not going to be like real Amazons. We always try to make everyone happy but we can't."

DC Films or Gal Gadot have yet to comment on the latest criticism.
