The Space Shuttle Discovery plans a San Diego detour
In 1993, local San Diego radio DJ Dave Rickards told his listeners that the Space Shuttle Discovery, seen here in an image taken from the International Space Station, would be stopping off at the tiny military base of Montgomery Field, after a change of landing plans. The thousands of people who enthusiastically set out to watch the landing and found themselves caught in a huge traffic jam were not amused to discover that the entire story was an April Fool's Day prank. Local traffic police, who had been called out to manage the chaos, were even less impressed - and ended up billing the radio station for their time and effort.
In fact, Discovery was not in orbit at the time of the hoax - and would have been far too large to land in Montgomery regardless.
