Jo Pavey could be forgiven for a sigh and a roll of the eyes at the drugs question.
Few British athletes – her friend Jenny Meadows is one of them – have seen their career blighted by cheats more than Pavey. Almost every one of her major finals features the requisite asterisk next to at least one drug-fuelled runner’s name.
Only this summer will the decade-long wait to receive a first global medal of her career finally come to an end, thanks to Elvan Abeylegesse’s recent retrospective disqualification from the 2007 World Championships 10,000 metres, in which Pavey originally finished fourth.
But sighing and scowling is not in Pavey’s nature. Throughout the scandals that have inadvertently followed her career, she has remained open and honest, content to talk about the cheats who have robbed her of medals, honours and prize money without ever raising her voice.
